Hot Apple Punch: perfect fall drink

Fall is finally here. It’s been unusually warm the last few weeks, but the weather has finally started to cool. Hot Apple PunchI had to scrape frost off the windshield before we could head to preschool the other day. So it’s time to bust out the chunky knit sweaters, scarves and boots. It’s the time of year when you want to cuddle up with a warm cup of tea and enjoy the changing fall leaves. But sometimes you want something special, different from the usual tea and coffee. At this time of year, I like to indulge in a little hot apple punch.

A few years ago, back when Pinterest first started, a friend of mine found a pin for hot punch and made some for a Halloween party she was throwing. I really liked it and tracked down the pin. I’ve made it several times since then, each time changing the recipe, adjusting it a little until it was perfect. The original recipe called for like 1/4 cup of sugar, but I found that the fruit juices sweet enough. I personally try to use not-from-concentrate, no-sugar-added juices. I always say you can add more sugar but you can’t take it out. This hot punch warms the soul and is the perfect fall drink. It’ll also be a hit with at any gatherings like Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner!

Ingredients:

  • 7 cups apple juice
  • 3 cups pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 lemon, sliced and juiced

Hot Apple Punch: The Perfect Fall DrinkDirections:

  1. Combine the juices, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg in a large pot.
  2. Chop the lemon into 3 or 4 slices. To get the most juice, roll the lemon on your countertop while applying pressure. It’s breaks-up the little vesicles so you get the most juice out of your citrus fruit. Squeeze the juice into the pot and then throw the pieces into the pot as well.
  3. Bring the juices up to a boil and then reduce to a low simmer. Allow the punch to simmer for about 2-3 hours.
  4. Serve warm and enjoy!

Another great option is to make this in a crockpot. Combine the ingredients in the crockpot and cook on low for 4-6 hours. It’s great because most crockpots have a “keep warm” setting which makes it an ideal way to serve this hot punch at a group gathering.
